Work

Hello! Find out more about my creative output here if you can’t be particularly bothered to flick through each of my posts.

UPDATE: I have just finished in a post at Market Intelligence, a magazine publishers and conference organiser for the fresh produce industry (juicy!), helping them develop a social media strategy. I am looking for new opportunities!

Websites I developed:

www.freshconvenience.com – tweaked and played around with CSS to get this looking pretty

www.fpjconferences.com – built for an upcoming conference in the Midlands

www.fruitweb.com/tv – edited video and developed this multimedia site for the magazines output

Websites I managed:

www.asiafruitcongress.com

www.eurofruitcongress.com/me

www.eurofruitcongress.com/sh

I have also worked in print and online for several publications. Please find links and downloads to work samples below.

The Word Ho Chi Minh City

Position: Print and Online Journalist at The Word – Vietnam’s premier lifestyle magazine.

A little video about how it was like working there:

Feature: Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Peter Arnett

““I have learned that there is redemption, that there is life after the worst that mankind can inflict on itself”

Feature: Legendary Vietnam war photographer Tim Page

“When I come here now I hardly see the war, only the archaeological scraps of it. I come back now because of my friends, because of the intrigue and mystery this place continues to espouse.”

December

  • After the Lay Off – “After nearly four years it came to an end. I really enjoyed the job and built up a great team of people. We had the spirit of camaraderie, a good working environment, and when that came to an end it was a shock to the system.”

November

  • Shoot Em’ Up - “Laser Tag, I hoped, would prove to be a very different sort of challenge. Could my sneaky disposition possibly get me further than my wimpy muscles?”
  • Tune In: Cover Story – “For live music these are exciting times and if ever the music scene is going to explode, it is now. We explore the issues behind making it all happen. So, time to read on, tune in and get involved.”
  • Band by Band: Loretofest 2009 – “With a line-up featuring more international acts than ever before, and the best the local scene has to offer, it’s going to be one hell of a music feast.”
  • The Birth of Rock? – “I don’t care about what they think. Maybe I am different stylistically, but as you see in the music industry here a lot of the male singers always look like girls.”
  • Mo’ Money No Problems - ““I am the worst guy in the world for growing a moustache. Last year in New Zealand I won the 11-a-side prize, because that was the amount of hairs there were either side of my nose”.

October

  • 48 Hours in Hoi An – “The main road, Tran Hung Dao, becomes Cua Dai and also the route to the town’s most popular beach as it heads east, while Hai Ba Trung is the main route that runs perpendicularly into the Old Quarter.”
  • Skates of Glory – “Inside this glorified shed lies one of the more surreal scenes of Vietnam. A large glittering disco ball hangs from the ceiling shedding light on some rather hysterical scenes below.”
  • Xe Om Diaries - “Later I return to the same spot only to engage in long and tiresome conversations with shoe sellers, sunglasses salesmen and hookers.”

August

  • Children of the Dust – “At the end of the day these kids are being exploited. The smiles they project as they sit down next to you, turn to pain, loneliness, trepidation and fear when they go home at night.”
  • Outside Hitters – “They (Vietnamese teams) don’t want to bring a foreign kid here and they play really bad. They’d rather bring a Thai kid or a Chinese kid because they’re Asian.”

July

  • Democrats Abroad – “Most people didn’t know we existed or what we do. A lot of Americans here are busy and don’t spend a lot of their time worrying about politics.”
  • Greener Pasteur – “In terms of nightlife the place is beginning to boom, offering a great series of bars, all in walking distance.”

June

  • Are Times Still Lush - “My business before heavily relied on tourists. By diversifying you don’t get the big swings that other places are susceptible to.”
  • A Lifeline for the Blind – “People don’t see the importance of computers for blind people. There’s plenty of focus on housing and food, but littleon education. If you give blind people that
chance they will take it and show their ability to society.”

May

  • The Underground – “It’s easier for other bars to move, but not us, mainly because of our concept.”
  • Ten-Ten: How to Be a Rockstar – “Hanging out with the war vets down on Little Pagoda Street or getting oneself a badass tattoo (something in the vein of a frog coiled around a dagger) is the way forward.”

April

  • Enjoy the Slowlife – “Hosts and guests come together to cook organic lobsters farmed in Nha Trang, participate in the messy frolics of the general manager’s weekly cocktail party and even journey around local areas to sample some of the favourite street food hotspots.”
  • Toi Yeu Moi Truong - “It saddens me to see Vietnamese people treating their environment like this.”

March

  • Veggin’ It Up – “Even the locals themselves look at you with incredulous eyes at the mere mention that “toi an chay” (I’m vegetarian).”
  • From Lagos to Saigon – “The media makes it worse for us everyday. For Nigerians who pay their taxes, their rent, support their families and are good contributors, the situation is very difficult.”
  • Technoschools – “All schools are striving to be technologically cutting edge. It is
the very thing that can make or break a school’s reputation.”
  • Ten-Ten: House Hunting – “Without an English language newspaper with a section dedicated to rentals or a good internet resource, finding out where there are places up for rent can be tough.”

February

  • Be My Valentine – “Where romantic dining is concerned, Ho Chi Minh City has plenty to offer.”
  • Lightweight – “What really reflects back is the trembling body of an adolescent. A scrawny 23 year old in skimpy black Y-fronts, body all goose-pimpled from a faltering air con unit and frail from decades of geekery.”
  • Madagui Trophy – “Deforestation is the biggest problem here and I want to draw attention to the cause. It is people who are responsible for this problem, so it is people who have the power to change it.”

______________________________________________________________________________________

January

  • Bui Thi Xuan – “The road is host to a number of odd little stalls all specialising in shop and hotel furnishings.”
  • Dai Nam Theme Park – “Outside of Ho Chi Minh City, an hour’s ride west down Highway 13, lurks Vietnam’s own breathtaking land of wonderment, one to rival the plans of Walt Disney himself. Well, almost.”

December 08

  • Hai Ba Trung – “Almost blending into the tapestry of neon that shimmers over Hai Ba Trung, Mon Hue is a good place to dine with a large group of friends with its cool, roomy interior complete with hanging red lanterns.”
